New appreciation for art

Recently I've been doing a lot of art criticisms in school, and it has really given me a new appreciation for the meanings behind the medium. Do all artists have a specific message, symbol, meaning? Or is the point of art simply to evoke orignial interpretations by the viewer? It's made me wonder about the messages behind my art. I guess I'll think twice now before each brushstroke.
